Brake light switch fixed!!

by Laurie Z

Hi All, I have been dealing with an issue for quite some time, off and on. Finally, today I think it’s fixed for good and I thought I would share it with the group! Yes, I’m excited because it’s been a thorn in my side for way too long! Two things.

The brake light switch my 1996 34j Bounder is located near the top of the brake pedal itself. When it malfunctions it will affect the cruise control and the way the transmission shifts, also it won’t go from park to drive, and if it does, it may be intermittent. Who knew this little switch controls so much! The brake lights won’t work right either. That could be intermittent too. The fuse for it is in number 9 under the dash fuses. It’s a 15amp fuse, it’s blue. It’s on the bottom on the left.

Secondly, if the brake pedal isn’t adjusted right it will affect how the brake light switch is pressed and it won’t function properly either. The adjustment for that is right behind the gas pedal. It has two 3/4 nuts on a rod that when both are loosened you can turn to adjust the brake pedal up and down. If you raise the brake pedal it will take the slop out of the brake pedal and press on the switch more. The brake pedal shouldn’t have any slop in it. If you put your hand where your foot goes and wiggle the pedal up and down it shouldn’t move. When done adjusting tighten back down the two 3/4 volts. To get to the switch itself the driver’s seat has to come off. 4-1/2 inch bolts hold it on. Lift the seat up a few inches then you can disconnect the little cable that allows the back of the seat to go up and back. No need to worry about the levers that slide the seat back and forth. When removing the switch look at it to make sure you put it back the same way and which position the two wire come off. There may be some washers or bushings so watch how they come out. Mine switch got really hot and was pretty much fried, but I think it went out gradually. So the connectors on the end of the existing wires had to be changed out too. Just snip and crimp new ones on.

Wow, what a weight off my shoulders!!
