    USB Plugs

by Kevin Noble April 17, 2022
    written by Kevin Noble

I sometimes stay at places that don’t have power but I want to charge my devices while I sleep next to my bed.  I also hate using all my plugs for usb blocks when i’m plugged into camp power. I bought some USB sockets from Amazon and wired them in to my power wired for my bed side lights in the bedroom and in the cabinet above the pull out sofa.

For the ones in the bedroom I used a hole say the same size as the socket to cut into the wall.  Since the socket mounted deeper than the wall was thick I took a 1/2 inch piece of wood and cut it 2×2 inch and cut a hole in that as well.  I used a router on the edges and then painted them.  I fed the wire up through the wall cavity up to the light fixture and splice the positive and negative into the existing light wiring.  I then mounted the socket to the 2×2 wood and screwed it into the wall. I did the same for the other side of the bed.

For the ones above the sleeper sofa i made the same 2×2 blocks.  I opened the top storage bin and popped the bottom panel off to gain access to the light wiring.  I drilled holed into the bottom of the cabinet and fed everything through and screwed the blocks in.  Spliced the positive and negative into the wiring for the lights and put everything back together.  Very happy with this simple update and looks factory.
